No makeup movement embrace your natural beauty

Empowerment to embrace your natural beauty

Many women especially celebrities were encouraged to wear makeup in order to perfect all the time. The race towards today’s beauty standard can increase your insecurities to the point you don’t have the courage to walk out of the house without makeup. Women often feel that makeup is the perfect shield against judgment and often opt to put on this mask to feel comfortable and hide their insecurities of not being beautiful enough. The unrealistic beauty expectations that no human can achieve completely is a lost quest.

In 2016 Alicia Keys stopped wearing makeup in public in her journey toward self-empowerment to show her true face, mind, soul, thoughts, dreams, struggles, and emotional growth.  Keys only focus in enhancing her natural glow with a complete skin care regimen, serums, masks, rollers, oils, facials, spf, healthy meals and exercises. Many artist followed her path posting bared faced Instagram pictures.

True confidence and empowerment is to accept ones flaws and work to fix your skin issues instead of using makeup to cover it up to exude confidence. Many skin issues are due to bad habits that we need to fix from the inside out and protect the skin from the harsh environment. This will help to decrease the signs of aging in the long run, something that makeup won’t be able to cover.

In addition, love yourself and stay positive to supporting each other in the realization that worth isn’t based on looks. When you chose to wear makeup once in a while on a fancy occasion to change you look and have a dramatic red carpet entrance is awesome but not to depend on makeup to feel beautiful to please the tough audience.

Embrace your natural face with flaws and all.

Be proud to be you!

Pillows: How They Can Be Harming (And Helping!) Your Skin

When it comes to helping your skin look its very best (younger, smoother, clearer), there are three things I know for sure:

1. Use well-formulated products for your unique skin type.

2. Sunscreen is the most powerful anti-aging product on the planet.

3. Your lifestyle choices matter.

In this post, I’ll be talking about one lifestyle choice, how you sleep at night on your pillow. You spend approximately 2,500 hours per year spent curled up with it, so good decisions matter depending on your skin concerns and what you’re looking to prevent or improve.

If you have under eye puffiness…you’ll want to sleep on two pillows at night. The theory here is that when your head is elevated, it helps to reduce fluid retention so you’re less puffy both in the face and under the eyes in the morning. (It’s also important to use light-weight eye cream to eliminate puffiness and keep it hydrated such as SwissZell Instant Eye Wrinkle Defense Cream.

If you have tired-looking skin…you’ll want to sleep on a single pillow that is thinner with a low elevation. The theory here is that during the daytime hours, you’re in an upright position for 16 hours and the blood can move away (downward) from the face making the skin look pale and tired in people who are genetically prone to this. So at night, you want to have your head as flat as possible (and ideally, tilted a bit backward) to re-balance that flow and stimulate circulation to the face to give an inner glow. It’s also why I suggest using a well-formulated and hydrating serum like this one.

If you have deep wrinkles that run from the nostril to the corner of the mouth – you’ll want to sleep on your back. Or if you’re a side sleeper, position your head on the lower corner of your pillow. The theory here is that to prevent the deep creases (known as “parentheses” or “marionette” lines), you want to avoid a squishing of the cheeks, which only exacerbates these lines that come naturally with age due to smiling and laughing.

If you have deep horizontal wrinkles across your neck – you’ll want to sleep on only one pillow that is thinner with a low elevation. The theory here is that if your head is elevated while you sleep (especially for those with shorter necks), you are creasing the skin by having your head tilted in a downward position. This is also known as “tech neck” where the 45-degree angle created when you hang your head down to look at your cell phone during the day causes premature folds and wrinkles in the neck. You always want to keep your head as straight as humanly possible. Someone once told me, “You’re only as young as your neck.”

If you have chest wrinkles above your breasts – you’ll want to sleep on your back. Known as “cleavage wrinkles”, these are deep, vertical creases caused by sleeping on your side, where gravity forces the top breast to bend farther past the body’s mid line than it should. Sleeping on your back is the best option for preventing these.

Note: If you’re a side sleeper but want to sleep on your back, some companies have invented pillows that can help train you into this new position. I’ve never tried any of them but have come across them online through the years, so do an internet search for these to see what you can find.

If you’re prone to breakouts…many people don’t realize this, but when sleeping on your pillowcase for 7-8 hours a night, you are transferring a lot of oil from both your hair and face onto the pillowcase. Oil ends up on your face when you sleep on your stomach or side. And because oil breeds bacteria which then leads to breakouts, it only makes sense that you’d want to sleep on a clean pillowcase every night.

My professional suggestion is to get two nights out of the same pillowcase. You can achieve this by sleeping on one side of the pillow on one night and then flipping it over on the second night. After two nights, you’ll want to replace your pillowcase with a fresh, clean one. I’ve heard that there are pillowcases made with materials other than cotton that supposedly are more breathable so that your skin doesn’t absorb dirt and oil. If you’re really serious about your skin and want to prevent breakouts, you may want to look into those types.

And of course cleansing your skin before you go to bed to remove the day’s dirt, bacteria, germs and makeup is essential to keep breakouts under control. A day’s worth of oil on the skin (and bacteria from touching your face all day) will cause more breakouts than just a dirty pillowcase, so please make sure you are diligent about washing your face daily.

What kind of alcohol to avoid in your skincare

With how much misleading information there is online in regards to alcohol in skincare, it’s easy to see why some people believe it really isn’t all that bad for skin. However, the research (and we mean a lot of research) makes it perfectly clear: alcohol as a main ingredient in any skincare product is a problem.

We know we can’t convince everyone but we hope the latest research, and, if you’ll pardon the pun, sobering facts about alcohol-based products, will help you put down the bottle if alcohol is lurking at the top of the ingredient list (we know, another pun, but we couldn’t help ourselves).

But first we need to clarify what kind of alcohol we want you to avoid.

Bad vs. Good Alcohol in Cosmetic Formulas

When we express concern about the presence of alcohol in skincare or makeup products, we’re referring to a drying type of alcohol that you’ll most often see listed on an ingredient label as SD alcoholdenatured alcohol, or, less often, isopropyl alcohol. These types of volatile alcohols give products a quick-drying finish, immediately degrease skin, and feel weightless on skin, so it’s easy to see their appeal, especially for those with oily skin.

But those short term benefits end up with negative long term consequences.

When you see these names of alcohol listed among the first six ingredients on an ingredient label, without question they will aggravate and be cruel to skin. No way around that, it’s simply bad for all skin types. Consequences include dryness, erosion of the surface of skin (that’s really bad for skin), and a strain on how skin replenishes, renews, and rejuvenates itself. Alcohol just weakens everything about skin.

There are other types of alcohols, known as fatty alcohols, which are absolutely non-irritating and can be exceptionally beneficial for skin. Examples you’ll see on ingredient labels include cetylstearyl, and cetearyl alcohol. All of these are good ingredients for dry skin, and in small amounts fine for any skin type as they give a pleasing texture and help keep ingredients stable in products. It’s important to discern these skin-friendly forms of alcohol from the problematic types of alcohol.

Likewise, you may have heard that alcohol is a good ingredient because it helps other ingredients like retinol and vitamin C absorb into skin more effectively. Although it’s true that it does enhance absorption of ingredients, the alcohol also destroys skin’s surface and the very substances that keep your skin healthy over the long term. There are certainly other, gentler ways to get good ingredients into skin, without damaging its outer layer, an issue that causes more problems than benefits.

How Alcohol Damages Skin and Makes Breakouts Worse

If your skin is oily, it can be tempting to use alcohol-based products because they provide an immediate matte finish, essentially de-greasing the “oil slick.” The irony of using alcohol-based products to control oily skin is that the damage from alcohol can lead to an increase in bumps and enlarged pores.

Alcohol can actually increase oiliness, so the immediate de-greasing effect is eventually counteracted, prompting your oily skin to look even more shiny.

The studies are clear: Alcohol harms your skin’s protective surface, depletes vital substances needed for healthy skin, and makes oily skin worse. To put it simply, it’s pro-aging. Given the hundreds of skin-friendly alternatives that are available, it’s essential to abstain from products front-loaded with the skin damaging forms of alcohol.
