Pillows: How They Can Be Harming (And Helping!) Your Skin

When it comes to helping your skin look its very best (younger, smoother, clearer), there are three things I know for sure:

1. Use well-formulated products for your unique skin type.

2. Sunscreen is the most powerful anti-aging product on the planet.

3. Your lifestyle choices matter.

In this post, I’ll be talking about one lifestyle choice, how you sleep at night on your pillow. You spend approximately 2,500 hours per year spent curled up with it, so good decisions matter depending on your skin concerns and what you’re looking to prevent or improve.

If you have under eye puffiness…you’ll want to sleep on two pillows at night. The theory here is that when your head is elevated, it helps to reduce fluid retention so you’re less puffy both in the face and under the eyes in the morning. (It’s also important to use light-weight eye cream to eliminate puffiness and keep it hydrated such as SwissZell Instant Eye Wrinkle Defense Cream.

If you have tired-looking skin…you’ll want to sleep on a single pillow that is thinner with a low elevation. The theory here is that during the daytime hours, you’re in an upright position for 16 hours and the blood can move away (downward) from the face making the skin look pale and tired in people who are genetically prone to this. So at night, you want to have your head as flat as possible (and ideally, tilted a bit backward) to re-balance that flow and stimulate circulation to the face to give an inner glow. It’s also why I suggest using a well-formulated and hydrating serum like this one.

If you have deep wrinkles that run from the nostril to the corner of the mouth – you’ll want to sleep on your back. Or if you’re a side sleeper, position your head on the lower corner of your pillow. The theory here is that to prevent the deep creases (known as “parentheses” or “marionette” lines), you want to avoid a squishing of the cheeks, which only exacerbates these lines that come naturally with age due to smiling and laughing.

If you have deep horizontal wrinkles across your neck – you’ll want to sleep on only one pillow that is thinner with a low elevation. The theory here is that if your head is elevated while you sleep (especially for those with shorter necks), you are creasing the skin by having your head tilted in a downward position. This is also known as “tech neck” where the 45-degree angle created when you hang your head down to look at your cell phone during the day causes premature folds and wrinkles in the neck. You always want to keep your head as straight as humanly possible. Someone once told me, “You’re only as young as your neck.”

If you have chest wrinkles above your breasts – you’ll want to sleep on your back. Known as “cleavage wrinkles”, these are deep, vertical creases caused by sleeping on your side, where gravity forces the top breast to bend farther past the body’s mid line than it should. Sleeping on your back is the best option for preventing these.

Note: If you’re a side sleeper but want to sleep on your back, some companies have invented pillows that can help train you into this new position. I’ve never tried any of them but have come across them online through the years, so do an internet search for these to see what you can find.

If you’re prone to breakouts…many people don’t realize this, but when sleeping on your pillowcase for 7-8 hours a night, you are transferring a lot of oil from both your hair and face onto the pillowcase. Oil ends up on your face when you sleep on your stomach or side. And because oil breeds bacteria which then leads to breakouts, it only makes sense that you’d want to sleep on a clean pillowcase every night.

My professional suggestion is to get two nights out of the same pillowcase. You can achieve this by sleeping on one side of the pillow on one night and then flipping it over on the second night. After two nights, you’ll want to replace your pillowcase with a fresh, clean one. I’ve heard that there are pillowcases made with materials other than cotton that supposedly are more breathable so that your skin doesn’t absorb dirt and oil. If you’re really serious about your skin and want to prevent breakouts, you may want to look into those types.

And of course cleansing your skin before you go to bed to remove the day’s dirt, bacteria, germs and makeup is essential to keep breakouts under control. A day’s worth of oil on the skin (and bacteria from touching your face all day) will cause more breakouts than just a dirty pillowcase, so please make sure you are diligent about washing your face daily.

Should You Use Eye Cream Both Morning And Night?

One of the many lovely responsibilities that comes with getting older is the adoption of an anti-aging routine. As you age, words like “retinol,” “hyaluronic acid,” and “Botox” suddenly become part of your vocabulary. Heavy-duty treatments aside, most dermatologists agree that your twenties is a great time to start an eye cream routine.

You might not be showing any signs of aging in your twenties or sometimes thirties, but it’s never too early to get a jump on preventing lines, says Erin Gilbert, M.D., celebrity skin expert. “The most important thing you can do is to adopt a good skin-care routine,” she says. “Using eye cream at an early age will not only get you on the road to preventing damage from occurring, but it will also begin protecting your skin from environmental aggressors.”

Eye cream is something that dermatologists all agree we should use to help moisturize sensitive eye skin and ward off fine lines. But, there’s not much out there by way of what to use or how to use them—and more importantly, when to use them.

Your eye cream really does need that time to settle into the skin. Applying it in the morning, then putting more products on top of it, makes it harder for it to absorb into the skin and can make those other products dissolve more easily. That’s why it’s best to use eye creams at night. Plus, your skin rejuvenates and repairs itself while you’re sleeping (like the rest of your body), so while your skin is working, it might as well have something to work with.

There’s also a specific way you should be applying your eye cream. You don’t want to apply just underneath your eyes where you may see puffiness or dark circles. Instead, you should apply eye cream all around the orbital bone to get at all the wrinkles and creases that crop up around your eyes.

Use your ring finger to dot your eye cream underneath and around your eye. It’s your weakest finger, perfect for applying products to the delicate eye area. With a patting motion, blend the cream in. Don’t smear or pull the cream around your eye, which could irritate the skin.

And now that you know how to apply it, we recommend this SwissZell Instant Eye Wrinkle Defense Cream ($125, Swisszell.com) In addition to de-puffing /anti-aging effect, this formula contains milk protein, for intense hydration and botanical extracts to fight signs of aging, and can help banish dark circles. Also, the super-gentle formula won’t cause any irritation if you get sloppy with your application.

This 3 Puffy-Eye remedies that really work!

You’d think getting an adequate sleep and eating a healthy would make under-eye puffiness disappear, but alas, we still see bags underneath our eyes. And while these bags aren’t nearly as bad as the ones we encounter following a late night out, they can be just as ugly. Since we’re tired of people asking if we’re tired, we reached out to a few skin experts for a few puffy-eye remedies.

Puffy eyes are mainly caused by excess salt in the body. But that’s not all: UV rays and free radicals can also contribute to under-eye puffiness, as these environmental factors damage the delicate skin around the eyes, making the formation of bags more likely. So just what can we do to protect and de-puff the under-eye area? For more tips on how to remedy under-eye puffiness, keep on reading.

  1. DRINK WATER

Drink-Water-All-Day

Puffiness around the eyes is due to excess salt in the body, which causes liquid retention. To remedy this boost your water intake. And while that may seem counter intuitive at first drinking water water flushes out the excess water in your soft tissues, thus reducing puffiness.

2.  APPLY A COLD COMPRESS

q

Applying a cool compress under your eyes helps blood vessels carry excess water away from the area of inflammation. But just what kind of compress should we apply? if you’re in a hurry, try applying a cool, wet tea bag to the area of inflammation. However, if you have a bit more time, you can chill your eye gel in the fridge (not freezer) or applying a cooling eye mask to the under-eye area.

3. APPLY A GOOD EYE CREAM

how_to_get_rid_of_dark_under_eye_circles_and_bags_0-1

We suggest using a Swiss Zell Instant Defense Eye cream lightweight cream which instantly tightens your skin. Brighten and depuff the eye contour area and at the same time helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines. And here’s a pro tip: Keep your cream in the fridge for a cooling effect that will help to de-puff even more.

Hope this helps you diminish the appearance of puffy eyes. Also, always wear a sunscreen, as ultraviolet rays damage skin and contribute to the problem. What other tips for treating puffiness and eye bags do you know? If you know of any other advice, share your experience in the comments section!
