So he blamed the free radicals

My younger brother used to suffer from severe acne during his teenager days. What really annoyed him were his friends and relatives unwelcome comments like:

  • you have an unhealthy diet
  • you sleep too late
  • you touch your face too much or even worse,
  • you do not cleanse your face at all

What!! I mean he did everything right and still woke up with a pineapple face. But why?

A recent study published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology explains that the main culprit to acne is Free Radicals, because they cause inflammation in the skin which blocks pores and eventually leads to pimples. Free radicals are reactive, unstable atoms that are missing an electron. In an effort to gain stability, they steal an electron from a nearby stable molecule. This creates a new radical and results in a chain reaction, this repeated process is very damaging to our cells.

We are constantly exposed to free radicals through normal processes such as our body using oxygen (breathing) or responding to stress. Additional exposure comes from repeat contact with environmental influences like the sun exposure and pollution and smoking.

Then which antioxidants help to control acne breakouts the most? Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-“stealing” reaction.
